Nanga Parbat, standing at 8126 m, is the westernmost peak of the Himalayan range, ranking as one of Pakistan's five 8000 m peaks and the world's 9th highest. The massive 20 km-long series of peaks and ridges is strikingly visible from the south for over 100 km. Its solitary white appearance has earned it the names "The Naked Mountain" and "The Killer Mountain" due to the formidable challenges faced in reaching its summit. The Rupal face, rising over 5000m from the valley floor to the summit, offers trekkers awe-inspiring close-up views, while the north Raikot face drops over 7000m to the Indus River, creating one of the deepest gorges globally.
Accessed through the Astore Valley, branching off from the Karakoram Highway at Jaglot, the Rupal Valley on the south side provides short, easy treks with stunning views. Apart from glaciers, the region features pine and fir forests, sparkling streams, and open grasslands, earning the nickname, Fairy Meadows. The sight of Nanga Parbat from the Indus River is breathtaking, showcasing the world's largest land escarpment, rising about 7000m from the mountain's base to its summit.
The Diamer base camp trek is the lengthiest, requiring three days to reach. For the Raikot face, the journey involves reaching Raikot Bridge on the Karakoram Highway and switching to mountain jeeps for Tato Valley at the foot of Fairy Meadows.
This trek encompasses visits to the Diamer and Raikot faces of Nanga Parbat, crossing high passes en route. The trek traverses the captivating landscapes of the western finger of the great Himalayas, featuring alpine meadows, lofty pinnacles, dense forests, and uniquely fantastical forms of the landscape.
